Appointed by the President on the Union government's advice; took charge 23 Jan 2018. No selection committee existed then. Before the 2023 Act there was no statute on selection: the Union government, by convention, picked senior serving or retired Secretary-rank officers and the President appointed on its advice, with the senior-most EC normally elevated to CEC (as described by the Supreme Court in Anoop Baranwal, 2 Mar 2023).

Ashok Lavasa sent his resignation to the President and asked to be relieved on 31 Aug 2020 to join ADB. The Law Ministry's later notification recorded that he resigned with effect from 31 Aug 2020. As senior EC he would otherwise have become CEC in April 2021.
The resignation date of 18 Aug 2020 is reported by PTI via 'sources in the poll panel'; the effective date of 31 Aug 2020 is in the Law Ministry notification quoted by Scroll and in ECI's own former-EC list. ECI's farewell release (28 Aug 2020) says he found the choice to leave difficult.
