Arun Goel takes voluntary retirement and is appointed EC the same day

On 18 Nov 2022, the day after a Constitution Bench began hearing petitions on how Election Commissioners should be chosen, the government shortlisted four names, the PM recommended Arun Goel, his voluntary retirement as Heavy Industries Secretary was accepted with the notice period waived, and his appointment was notified. He took charge on 21 Nov 2022.

The Supreme Court examined the file and said it was 'a little mystified' how he applied for VRS the same day, but said its remarks were not an individual assessment of the appointee. PIB posted the President's appointment notice on 19 Nov 2022.
