Government constitutes first selection and search committees under the Act

According to the Union's reply recorded by the Supreme Court, the selection committee (Prime Minister, Home Minister, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha) and the search committee (Minister of State for Law, Home Secretary, DoPT Secretary) were constituted on 1 February 2024. A selection meeting called for 7 February to fill one vacancy was postponed.

Section 6 says the search committee is headed by 'the Minister of Law and Justice'; the Union's reply calls its chair the 'Minister of State, Law and Justice'. The order does not name the minister; IE (14 March 2024) reports that Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal briefed the selection committee on the shortlist.
