Commission notifies 19 appellate tribunals for West Bengal SIR appeals

Following a Supreme Court order of 10 March 2026, the Commission notified 19 appellate tribunals, each a single retired High Court judge, to hear appeals against judicial officers' decisions. They began work on 13 April, days before the 23 and 29 April polls, and restored 1,607 electors in time to vote.

Notification text not found on eci.gov.in. IE 18.09.2026 gives 38,20,683 appeals from the counter-affidavit; IE 19.09.2026 gives 38.31 lakh from a later filing. IE 07.04.2026 describes the tribunals as set up by the Calcutta High Court under Supreme Court supervision, while IE 18.09.2026 says the EC notified them on 20.03.2026.
