Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said the SIR had removed about 13 crore names across 19 states since June 2025, including 1.43 crore in Karnataka. He demanded a halt to the SIR, the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and an independent IT and forensic audit of roll databases.
The 'across 19 states' count differs from the Indian Express's '30 States/UTs'. Karnataka's CEO puts draft-stage exclusions at 1,07,96,339 of 5,54,32,314; how Congress reached 1.43 crore was not stated in the report. Surjewala also said the Commission had been 'hijacked' and that the CEC was involved; these are his allegations. No ECI response to this specific claim was found. The report says ECI has disputed the characterisation of an internal split and said the Commission's decisions were unanimous; the report does not give a press-note number, and the ECI statement itself was not opened.
