Bill replacing CJI with a Cabinet Minister introduced in Rajya Sabha

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the CEC and Other ECs (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha. It proposed a selection committee of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the PM; a search committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary; and CEC/EC pay and service conditions equal to the Cabinet Secretary's.

The Statement of Objects and Reasons cites the Anoop Baranwal judgment and its 'till a law is made' clause as the reason for the bill.
