Responding to the criticism, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said appointing Rathan Kelkar as the Chief Minister's secretary was the government's prerogative, called him a competent officer and said there was nothing unusual in it.
CPI(M)'s P Rajeev had said Kelkar was appointed without a cooling-off period; the minister's reported reply does not address that point.
