Hearing a PIL on communal campaign speeches, a bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi asked what action the Commission had taken; its counsel said it could issue notices and advisories and file complaints but could not disqualify candidates. The bench said the Commission was effectively calling itself toothless and listed the matter for the next day. The same afternoon the Commission barred Yogi Adityanath (72 hours), Mayawati (48 hours), Maneka Gandhi (48 hours) and Azam Khan (72 hours) from campaigning.
The PIL was filed by Harpreet Mansukhani. The campaign bans were issued under Article 324 and took effect the next morning.
