The President appointed Sunil Arora, a retired 1980-batch Rajasthan-cadre IAS officer, as Election Commissioner by a Law Ministry announcement of 31 Aug 2017. He took charge on 1 Sep 2017, moving from Director General of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.
